This is an intensive programme for beginners to German, with the emphasis on developing your speaking and listening skills. Suitable for complete beginners.

Based on Willkommen Chapters 1-8(Hodder Arnold).

Description

What is the course about?

The course aims to enable students to communicate with some fluency in a range of everyday situations. This is a fast track course. Therefore homework (2 hours/ week) is essential for this course.

What will we cover?

Based on Willkommen units 1-8 and additional material supplied by the tutor. Greetings and introductions, exchanging personal information, speaking about leisure pursuits and the family, ask for and give directions; order drinks in a café; ask and give prices; booking a hotel room; telling the time; talking about daily routine; making appointments; talking about daily routines,means of transport, talking about the past.
Grammar: present tense, word order, prepositions with accusative/dative, perfect tense with haben and sein, adjectival endings;separable verbs, modal verbs, the accusative.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-use numbers and the alphabet

-greet others, introduce yourself and give personal information (address, age, profession, study, nationality)

-speak about leisure pursuits

-speak about family relationships

-identify places in a town or city and ask for directions

-order food in a cafe and ask/give prices

-state likes and dislikes and say how often you do things

-tell the time and days of the week

-book a hotel room

-make an appointment and arrange to meet

-talk about daily routines


- talk about traveling around town

-start talking about events in the past

-make appointments

-have a basic knowledge of personal pronouns, possessive adjectives, genders and articles, plurals, the accusative, verb endings, irregular verbs, separable verbs and modal verbs (können and müssen).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Stage 1 course - no previous knowledge of German required.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.
