What is the course about?
To improve in all skill in order to communicate effectively with German speakers at an intermediate level.
What will we cover?
A selection of the following topics: Sports; means of transport; describe the purpose of something; describe attitudes; describe feelings; shopping habits; telephone language; environment; planning the future; make suggestions.
Grammar: "Pronominaladverbien" such as "wovon, davon", "worauf, darauf"; reflexive pronouns in the accusative and dative; "damit" and "um…zu"; genitive; prepositions with genitive; future with "werden"; subjunctive II.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
talk about a selection of the following topics:
- talk about sports,means of transport and/ or environmental issues
- describe attitudes and feelings
- describe shopping habits
- use telephone language
- talk about plans for the future using "werden"
- use "Pronominaladverbien"
- use reflexive pronouns in the accusative and dative
- use "damit" and "um … zu"
- start using the genitive
- use the subjunctive II.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Students should have studied German for about three years recently or have taken the first two modules of this course, or have an equivalent knowledge of the language. B1

It is also essential that you have some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation. It would be helpful if you had knowledge of more intermediate grammar terminology such as: dative, accusative, subordinate and main clause.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is based on the communicative approach:
- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate
Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.
