What is the course about?

The course aims to show students how to cope with everyday situations with increased confidence; to increase knowledge of grammar and word order; to begin to discuss topical issues.

What will we cover?

Talk about media in everyday life; talk about politics; express wishes; talk about the past; compare behaviour and politeness in different cultures.

Grammar: adjectives ending in different suffixes; opposites with "un-"; "welcher" and "dieser"; verbs with prepositions; regular and irregular imperfect; prepositions with dative; more on subordinate clauses.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- talk about media in everyday life

- talk about politics

- talk with greater ease about the past

- be more confident expressing wishes

- compare behaviour and politeness in different cultures

- use adjectives ending in different suffixes

-use verbs with prepositions

-use subordinate clauses with greater confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have studied German for at least 2.5 years recently or have completed the first two modules of this course. A2.2
For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide or on our website.
It is also essential that you have some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation. It would be helpful if you had knowledge of more intermediate grammar terminology such as: dative, accusative, subordinate and main clause.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.
