This is an intensive programme for near beginners, with the emphasis on developing your speaking and listening skills. Suitable if you have completed 'German 1 fast track: module 2' or equivalent. Based on Willkommen Chapters 10-12 (Hodder Arnold).


What is the course about?

To build on the sound knowledge of basic German already acquired by developing further the four skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing, and by expanding vocabulary and language structures to enable students to build up their confidence and to deal with more complex situations.

What will we cover?

Based on the course books Willkommen, units 10 to 12 and additional material supplied by the tutor.
Themes: shopping; the weather; health; telephoning; writing a cv; jobs and plans for the future; daily routine at work and home; past events and personal interests; general revision of material covered in previous modules.
Grammar: Direct and indirect objects; personal pronouns in the dative; modal verbs; word order in sub-ordinate clauses (wenn, weil, obwohl, dass) and questions; prepositions; separable and reflective verbs; future tense; irregular verbs; adverbs of frequency; general revision of grammar covered in previous modules.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-discuss appropriate clothing and gifts

-go shopping for clothes

-make plans

-talk about holidays

-report about weather conditions

-discuss health issues and report aches and pains

-make a telephone call

-discuss German speaking countries and the German language

-talk about daily routines and express frequency of events.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for students who have either completed the first two modules of the beginners fast-track programme or who have studied German for at least one year for approximately two hours a week.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do 2-3 hours weekly homework and revision.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

German 2 revision courses in the summer; German 2 upper, module 1 in September. Fast track 2 starting in September. Please enrol as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
