French beginners: module 2

What is the course about?

This course aims to enable you to communicate in French in everyday situations. It will strengthen your knowledge and introduce new structures and vocabulary gradually. You will build up your confidence in all four skills with the emphasis on speaking and listening.

What will we cover?

Topics: saying where you live, shopping for food, giving and asking for directions.

Grammar: present tense, prepositions, introduction to the passé composé, articles: definite/indefinite/partitive.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- talk about where you live

- buy food and say what you have bought

- give and ask for directions

Please note that the above outcomes are flexible as the pace of the lessons will depend on the achievements of the group of students.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Near beginners - For students who have some knowledge of French or who have completed French 1: module 1 covering units 1-3 of the French Experience 1 (BBC), new edition 2003.

For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide or at
You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Based on the course book The French Experience 1, (BBC) new edition 2003, units 4-6. You may want to buy the CDs with the book although this is not compulsory as the tutor will provide listening activities throughout the course. Please note that the course book is used as a support only. You will not cover all the activities in the book during the course.
Please try: Grant and Cutler - (020 7734 2012) and The European Bookshop - (020 7734 5259).

I would tell them to never miss a lesson and always pay attention and try not to speak too much english because it throws you off if too much english is being spoken
