Description

What is the course about?

This course aims to enable you to communicate in French in everyday situations. It will strengthen your knowledge and introduce new structures and vocabulary gradually. You will build up your confidence in all four skills with the emphasis on speaking and listening.

What will we cover?

Topics: organise a trip to France (hotel and transport), buy food (quantity, price…) and order food in a restaurant. Describe where you live. Likes and dislikes.

Grammar: prepositions, articles: definite/indefinite/partitive, present tense (common irregular verbs), modal verbs, verbs in the imperative form and adjectives.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- book an hotel room
- ask information about facilities in an hotel
- ask for a train ticket (or other transports)
- buy food and ask for the price
- order food in a restaurant
- describe your home
- describe your town

- use some irregular verbs confidently in the present tense
- use some prepositions (de/à) and articles in specific context
- use pouvoir and vouloir confidently
- use basically feminine and masculine forms of adjectives

Please note that the above outcomes are flexible as the pace of the lessons will depend on the achievements of the group of students.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Near beginners- ideal if you have just completed a short beginners course recently or have completed French beginners intensive module 1A.

For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide or at http://bildutrapagaran.info/self-assess-your-level
You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Based on Build course material (handbook and online material). All the details will be given during the first lesson.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

French 1: module 3. Please enrol as soon as possible as places cannot be guaranteed.

I would tell them to never miss a lesson and always pay attention and try not to speak too much english because it throws you off if too much english is being spoken
