Description

What is the course about?

This course aims to enable hesitant and/or older learners to communicate in elementary French in everyday situations. You will build up your confidence by learning the language gradually with the emphasis on speaking and listening.

What will we cover?

Topics: ordering meals, describing people, talking about past holidays, talking about the weather

Grammar: revision of object pronouns le, la, les, and introduction of pronouns lui and leur; the conditional tense for politeness; use of on for nous, use of the main past tense (passé composé).

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- have more confidence in your ability to understand and be understood in simple French

- order meals

- describe people

- begin to use object pronouns with confidence

- begin to talk about past events

Please note that the above outcomes are flexible as the pace of the lessons will depend on the achievements of the group of students.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have studied French for at least a year or have completed French 1 at a gentle pace.

For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide or at http://bildutrapagaran.info/self-assess-your-level
You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is essentially based on the communicative approach, without seeking to devalue the traditional methods some students may be more familiar with. Great importance is attached to the creation of a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where everyone feels able to contribute. This means:

- active student interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course is based on the course book French 1 (Palgrave Foundations series - 2nd edition) from Unit 7. Please note that the course book is used as a support only. You will not cover all the activities in the book during the course.

This is a post-basic course taught by a French speaker who has a good aptitude for teaching adults. Each class is a mix of activities so you are never bored. There's always some grammar and some listening exercises. Highly recommended.
