Course Dates: 30/05/19 - 04/07/19
Time: 18:15 - 20:15

Writing is a powerful way to explore feelings and connect to our quieter selves. In this class, use a range of exercises to explore your self, your relationships and your hidden hopes. No experience required.

Description

What is the course about?

This course is about writing but it’s more concerned with the process than the product. From when we pick up our first writing tool, we’re generally encouraged to ‘hold it properly’ and use it well and at school we learn to judge and be judged by how our writing looks and what it says. When we shift our focus to the process of writing and lose our grammar/spelling censor – when there’s no way to get it wrong – writing can really help us to re-connect with our earlier selves and our inner language. ‘Inklings’ is built around the core exercise of non-stop writing. We’ll use different prompts (such as words, sounds, colours, smells), to anchor the conscious mind which can enable thoughts and feelings on the fringes of awareness to visit the page. Please note: Writing, as the core activity for this course, should be viewed as a tool for personal development and while we may discuss written content and ideas we will not critique each others' work or cover the technical aspects of creative writing. A wide range of creative writing courses is offered by our Humanities department.

What will we cover?

We’ll cover topics such as:
- Writing to and from a series of prompts such as: an object, picture, phrase or sound
- Writing to, away from and around yourself and your memories
- Patterning and clustering
- Writing through your senses
- Monologues and dialogues including different points of view to alter perspective.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Describe at least three different writing exercises which can be used to explore thoughts and feelings
- Identify and describe the significance of new self awareness gained through writing
- Practise non-stop writing with increased confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is open to anyone who can write by hand – at any level. You will need to be a fluent speaker of English, be able to listen and respond to others and take part in discussions but if English is not your first language you can choose to do the written exercises in another language. You'll be encouraged to share some of what you write, even if it’s only a word or a phrase and while there is never any pressure to do this, it does become an important and valued part of each group experience so please come willing to do so.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each session will include discussion (in pairs and groups) about the process of writing, accessing memory and imagination, sharing outcomes and options to develop work. You will be encouraged to practise non-stop writing between sessions and while this isn’t essential we hope you’ll want to find the time to do it.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a notebook and pen/pencil. We suggest:
- A new notebook – one that you can use just for this class and between sessions
- A pen or pencil which enables you to write quickly and freely.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

A number of other personal development courses use writing exercises to explore different topics – check individual course outlines. The Humanities department offers many Creative Writing courses if you would like to develop your work and focus on the quality and technical aspects of writing.

Whether you are looking for personal insights or an opportunity to view the way you write from a totally different perspective this is an amazing course.
You will need to participate and fully engage to really make the most of the course and the tutor creates every opportunity for you to do just that. There are no rights and wrongs , you really can't fail you can only enjoy. I'm just saddened that there isn't a follow on course available.

An enjoyable, thought provoking course which took my writing in some unexpected, at times insightful, directions and has encouraged me to write more often.

An excellent tutor, the classes are extremely well organised and you can contribute as much or as little as you like within a friendly environment.

Very nurturing course, encouraging personal creativity and development. The tutor is excellent, it is very well structured, organised and immensely liberating at the same time. You find yourself writing without even knowing it!

A well-structured course delivered with a light touch – as others have said the level of participation was very much up to the individual which I felt helped to create a supportive, trusting atmosphere; an inspiring course which has helped me to get started with journaling – so pleased I did it.

I have just completed this course and agree totally with the reviews. It is a very positive course in that you can be as involved as you feel able, there is no pressure but the more you commit the more you get out of it. It's totally personal, at your own speed. I highly recommend it.

A very well organised, unusual in depth discovery and great value for money course by Build! I wish they were all like these! A great tutor, who is passionate about her subject matter, structures well each class not too little but gets a good amount in with a flow of the course from each session to session. She has also thought about it and planned each course so that the beginners can progress together onto the next level. Really enjoyed it and a great personal discovery and inspiration to me. I can't do January's course due to other study commitments but I plan to be back. One of the best and value for money courses I've ever done at Build.

Cannot praise enough! A brilliant idea and a wonderful tutor. Opened so many possibilities and strengthened my creative side. We had an interesting list of topics and gentle guidance throughout, the atmosphere in the class was pleasantly calm and supportive. The organisation was impeccable, we had useful feedback and complete freedom of expression: one could share as much or as little as desired.
