Firenze viene definita la culla del rinascimento. In questa introduzione vedremo come il contesto politico e economico ha favorito la nascita di grandissimi artisti, inventori e filosofi.


What is the course about?

In this lecture we will see how the political and economic factors have contributed to the flourishing of the arts and philosophy in Florence.

What will we cover?

We will look at the creation of Florence as the city state; the importance of the Medici family as patrons of prominent artists and the great art developments such as the invention of perspective and the importance of the notion of ideas of beauty in painting and sculpture.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Have an understanding of the main factors that have made Florence so important in the Renaissance.
- Have an overview of the main artists that contributed to the creation of the use of perspective in painting
- Look and appreciate the significance of the notion of beauty in Renaissance Florence by looking at paintings and scultpures.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This lecture will be conducted in Italian and is therefore aimed at those of you with an advanced level of the language. It is suitable if you are attending Italian 4 or 5 at Citylit or have an equivalent level.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a lecture and is therefore tutor-led. Facts will be presented through the use of video clips, presentations, hand-outs etc.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No other cost. Students will just need to bring a pen and paper.

An excellent two hour session in Italian for those of us interested in hearing the language spoken and learning about the Renaissance at the same time. The teacher was well prepared, asked questions and checked for understanding regularly

Tutor Biographies
Francesco Bucciol

Francesco has taught Italian language classes and literature at Build since 2014. He also works as Head of the Classics Department. After graduating with honours in Modern Languages and Literatures (English, German and Serbo-Croat), he moved to London and started teaching Italian at various adult education colleges, which gave him the opportunity to share his interest in Italian language, culture and traditions to a diverse range of students. During this time, he also acquired experience in curriculum management. Francesco currently prepares students for Italian exams. His passion includes philology, Dante, early Italian literature and the history of Italy (primarily the Northeast, where he grew up and was educated).
