Come and discover unique aspects about this fascinating region of the North West of Spain, from the incredible history to culture and customs.


What is the course about?

This course offers a short historical and sociocultural view of Galicia and then focuses on three parts: Santiago de Compostela, La Coruña and Rias Altas & Bajas.The workshop explores the historical, cultural, natural and gastronomical aspects of cities and also of the main coast towns. It also offers an opportunity for Q&A for those who want to know more about this part of Spain.

What will we cover?

- Historical view of Galicia: the past through the present
- A walk through the cities: main socio-cultural aspects/important landmark attractions/gastronomy and wines
- The famous Camino de Santiago
- Films that will make you fall in love with Galicia
- Instructions of how to cook classic Galician dishes.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Better understand/explore the history and culture of this Spanish area

- Discuss, share experiences and perceptions about the region

- Practice/ expand/consolidate vocabulary and grammar related to topic

- Plan better for a trip to Galicia

- Continue to explore this beautiful region beyond the workshop by watching suggested films

- Learn how to cook the traditional and modern Galician dishes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students of all levels are welcome, as it will be an informative workshop done in Spanish. You should have an elementary level of the language (at least an A2 level).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate.

All materials will be provided by the tutor.

Óscar Salgado Suárez

Dr. Óscar Salgado-Suárez teaches Spanish language and cultural courses at Birkbeck, University of London; Imperial College and Build. His cultural research interests are 20th and 21st Century Spanish and Latin American visual and literary representations with a focus on storytelling, affects and humour studies in relation to historiography, national identities and power formations.
