What is the course about?

On this course you will understand the difference between an experimental digital film and a conventional narrative. You will learn how to create digital films that challenge rather than cater to the expectations of the audience. You will explore a variety of medium in different formats to create innovative digital films in both form and content.

What will we cover?

- Experimental Film and Video in a fine art context
- Capturing video and using experimental techniques
- Conceptualising ideas
- Recording video
- Capturing and editing footage in Final Cut ProX
- Exporting your movie.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand the difference between experimental film making and narrative film making practice.
- Conceptualise ideas
- Record video footage from a range of resources.
- Edit your sequence in Final Cut Pro X
- Export your sequence as a movie.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is designed as an introductory course but is suitable for any level. No previous film making experience is required but you should have basic computer experience including, using a keyboard and mouse, opening applications, saving and retrieving files.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note the Build uses Apple Mac computers in Digital arts, Film, Animation, Graphics, Illustration, Photography and Web design.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Our high definition cameras and the latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course. It would be useful to bring a memory stick or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.
