Do you want to improve your English? We offer a range of courses, taught in British Sign Language (BSL), for adults living in the UK who want to improve their skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and communication.

  1. Basic English and maths skills for Deaf people

    Location on this date: KS - Keeley Street
    This course is suitable if you have arrived in the UK from abroad and need to acquire basic English skills, or if you missed out on education at school due to communication barriers.You will develop basic skills in reading notices around you, learn new vocabulary and practise writing basic information about yourself. You will also work with basic numbers and measurements and use your skills in your everyday life. This course has no exam. This is the second part of a year-long course.

  2. Everyday English for Deaf people

    This course will enable you to acquire essential study skills such as learning strategies, organisation and communication skills needed to be successful on any English course (at entry level). This course has no exams.

  3. English level 1 for Deaf people

    Course Date: Mon 25 Feb 2019
    Location on this date: KS - Keeley Street
    This is a short but very intensive course which is mainly focused on preparing for English level 1 exams. There will be lots of mock exams and continuous feedback on reading, writing and communication (in BSL). It involves lots of homework, revision and regular feedback, and therefore requires requires a serious commitment to studying outside of the classroom hours.

    To join this course you will need to have completed the following 3 courses first: 'English Grammar for deaf people', 'Reading and writing for deaf people', 'English level 1 prep for deaf people'.

  4. English entry 2 for Deaf people

    Course Date: Tue 26 Feb 2019 (and 1 other date)
    Location on this date: KS - Keeley Street
    This course will help you to get confident in reading, writing and communication. You will learn to read pieces of texts, write sentences, spell correctly and use punctuation. This course is the second part of a year-long course. Your course tutor will discuss with you whether you are ready to take exams at the end of the course (it will depend on your mock exams results).

  5. English entry 1 for Deaf people
