Description

What is the course about?

A series of experiments and drawing exercises will introduce you to ways of seeing. You will explore line, tone, shape, form and mark-making using pencil, charcoal and chalk. The course encourages an inventive approach to composition and introduces you to the underlying abstract forces that occur in all visual exploration. The experience can then be applied to a range of specialist subjects that use drawing skills to support and explore creativity.

What will we cover?

- learning to look
- composition and tone
- light and shade
- gesture and mark-making
- putting it all together
- measurement and relating the subject to eye level.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- plan a composition and understand spatial relationships
- draw more accurately from observation
- draw using tone to establish structure and create solidity of form
- draw using line and gesture
- start to develop a personal approach to drawing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for beginners. No experience is necessary.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It is a good introduction to drawing. For the first half of the course new materials and techniques were introduced week by week. This makes it demanding as you move on quickly. Its also demanding because it really teaches you that looking and looking long and hard is a real skill that is challenging as we so rarely look at anything for any length of time.

I had barely touched a sketchpad since I was at school. With patience, knowledge and skill, the tutor guided a class of absolute beginners through the process of learning to draw. Starting with how to stand, hold the charcoal and move your arm through, by the end we were developing and creating attractive compositions, even drawing (pun intended) inspiration from Old Masters.

I already have my first commission - my final week study was bought by the friend who provided the photo I used for inspiration - it's going on her wall!

I'm coming back for Drawing 2 next term.

This was an excellent course where I learnt not only basic drawing techniques but also gained confidence on my skills. We used mainly charcoal, pastel and pencil although you could bring your own materials if you wanted to experiment with something else. The course outline is very accurate as to what will be taught during the course. We did a variety of exercises all of them interesting and engaging. The tutor was very knowledgeable about the subject and a great teacher bringing out the best in our abilities and giving constructive individual advice. I found her very inspiring and encouraging.

This is an excellent course. I'd not had any art lesson since leaving primary school but was amazed at how much progress I made in just 10 weeks – when I brought home my final week's project my wife wanted to frame it and hang it in the living room! We worked mainly in charcoal, with some experimenting in pencil and Conté crayon. The emphasis throughout was on drawing what we see, paying attention to proportions and angles, along with technical stuff like perspective. We did still lifes, interior perspective drawing, outside in the street drawing buildings, copying a great master, drawing our own left hand, and even a nude model (gesture drawings and then a long pose – yes, it's not easy, but you learn a lot). The best aspect of the course was the way the tutor combined a class setting with one-to-one instruction: we spent most of the time drawing, following an initial demo or presentation, then the tutor came round giving us individual advice as we worked, then a class discussion at the end.

A really interesting course- our tutor taught us a wide range of drawing techniques and was both very well organised and inspiring and was always willing to answer questions and to encourage us.

I found the course a great way to underscore my current drawing skills. Each session's learning aim was clearly stated and comprehensive; complete with examples of artists work and demonstrations from the teacher. These demonstrations proved invaluable in understanding what was required and how to make amendments.
I enjoyed exploring the terminology.....tone , perspective, negative space etc and use a range of techniques.
The teacher was encouraging, thoughtful and humouros
