What is the course about?

With a background briefing at Build in the morning and a guided walk in Regent's Park in the afternoon,you will discover the history, exuberant planting, sculptures and design of this fabulous Royal Park dating from the early 19th century. Special trees will be highlighted.

What will we cover?

The history of Regent's Park
Regent's Park: its sculptures and design NB. The frieze sculpture exhibition is not included
Regent's Park: its plants and trees.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

All levels. Mobility issues should be considered as the course includes an afternoon walk in Regent's Park.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The morning session will be at the Build, where there will be a background briefing on the park. You will be provided with a park map and directions on how to reach the park independently. We will then meet at the park after lunch for a walk. We may not finish the walk where we started, but information and further directions will be provided. If you are unclear about the travel, please let the tutor know before leaving the Build.

The walks will be slow and leisurely, and involve 10-15 mins standing

Please bring an A-Z of London and tube map, strong walking shoes, raincoat, and umbrella as the walk takes place whatever the weather.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No additional costs. Please bring pen and paper (or electronic equivalent)

If you already have any books or leaflets about the parks, or a tree identification book, you may like to bring these along.

Letta Jones

Letta Jones, MA, is a Lecturer in Horticulture and Garden History. She taught at Capel Manor College and and Birkbeck, University of London for 15 years. She now teaches classes at the Build, Marlborough College Summer School, Woodbrooke,Denman, Glenthorne and Knuston Hall. She is part of the Garden History Grapevine/Gardens Trust group which offers introductory and advanced courses in garden history www.gardenhistorygrapevine.wordpress.com. A guide at the Chelsea Physic Garden for 18 years, Letta now teaches on their education programme. She is a Green Flag Park judge and she also leads her own garden study tours abroad.
