What is the course about?
Training competent and professional person-centred counselling practitioners who subscribe to the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy as published by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

A comparison of the core model to psychodynamic counselling and cognitive behavioural counselling

Personal development (awareness of self in relation to others)
100 hours of supervised counselling practice gained on placement.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Participate in a group and be aware of self in relation to others
• Articulate a philosophically integrated model of counselling founded on the core values and beliefs of the person-centred approach, including contemporary developments and current research findings
• Demonstrate and embody person-centred counselling theory in practice
• Work with the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy;
• Demonstrate sufficient self-awareness and reflective skills to work ethically with clients
• Assess your own and your peers’ personal and professional development
• Critically evaluate your counselling work in terms of anti-oppressive and non-discriminatory practice
• Describe and critically evaluate psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural theories of counselling, in comparison to person-centred.
• Identify and demonstrate what it means to be a professional counsellor working within different organisational contexts
• Critically evaluate different models of psychopathology
• Design and carry out a counselling research project.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
LEVEL 4 on the National Qualifications Framework and externally validated by ABC Awards [External website]
• An understanding of the Person-Centred approach to counselling and training.
• The ability to take responsibility for your own learning
• A Certificate course in Counselling Skills of at least 150 hours spread over a minimum of 25 weeks completed within the last 3 years. Evidence of at least 80% attendance will be required with a copy of the certificate gained.
• As a core part of the diploma lies in working with the large group (max. 20) it is essential that students considering this course are aware of the implications of learning in groups.
• The ability to cope with the intellectual and academic requirements. Support with writing and course work is available for people with learning difficulties,(eg., dyslexia) Some limited support is available for others in the Learning Centre. If you have any learning difficulty or disability that might affect your ability to participate fully in all learning activities related to the course, please discuss this with us. The Build aims to provide appropriate support for students within its available resources.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Learning will be facilitated through experiential exercises, some teaching input and structured skills practice in pairs and triads. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning, to work with others in the group to negotiate their learning contract and to share personal experience. In addition to attending at Build, there will be one residential weekend in each year. Work outside course time includes reading widely, producing regular written assignments, securing a counselling placement and attending supervision.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
A comprehensive reading list will be available at the start of the course. If you are on a low income or in receipt of income-related benefits, you may be able to apply to the Student Bursary for assistance with some of these costs.
Do I need to check my level before I enrol?
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Applicants who are shortlisted will be invited to an interview.
What feedback will I get?
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
How will I be able to give my views on the course?
