Description

What is the course about?

Good editing is about two things: knowing your tools and how to best use them, and knowing how to structure a sequence so it flows flawlessly. In this course we will look at both of these aspects in more detail, exploring Final Cut Pro's advanced tools and techniques, and considering how to structure and create a successful narrative. We will use supplied clips and work on at least one portfolio piece.

What will we cover?

- How to use metadata to help set up an edit
- Using trimming tools to fine-tune an edit
- Advanced techniques for fine-tuning content, such as replacing and sliding
- Changing the appearance of a clip by changing scale, composition etc.
- Using text
- The use of effects to create and change a ‘look’.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- name and rate clips
- create usable keyword collections
- ripple and roll a clip
- use three-point editing to replace and/or overwrite clips in the timeline
- change the scale of a clip
- animate a transformation (e.g. scale) over time
- create a Ken Burns effect
- create a basic title
- create a basic mask
- use the colour match facility.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an intermediate class in Final Cut Pro X and editing moving image footage. It is essential that you have some previous experience in Final Cut Pro and are computer-literate, ideally on Apple Mac.

You will need to be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and be prepared to take part in group discussion. You should be happy using numbers and able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each week there will be a demonstration of a particular aspect of Final Cut. This is then followed by an exercise, allowing for some individual tutorial support. At least half of the course time is spent working on a sustainable project. There will be a forum sessions were we will look at each other’s work to discuss different aspects of editing/ filmmaking in general and the post-production process. Asking questions and commenting is encouraged at all times. Handbooks, manuals and worksheets are available.
Please note we will be working on Apple Mac computers.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Our high definition cameras and the latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course. It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC-formatted hard drives can be read by Apple Mac computers, but not written to). CDs/DVDs are also available, and you will have your own account in class where you can accumulate your work from week to week.
You might want to consider purchasing books related to the subject of filmmaking and editing. We will provide you with a range of hand-outs, and you can make use of books in the library.

If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, Build students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer. Your tutor will advise you on what you should buy. You will need to show your enrolment receipt in-store to receive your discount. This is an amazing course, not just to develop and improve your editing skills (even if you think you don't have editing skills), but also to learn about looking and telling (selecting and sequencing... that's my personal mantra nowadays). The tutor is brilliant and the friendly and talented classmates made me feel confident and supported.
