What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introduction to Final Cut software and the basic principles of editing moving image footage. It will be helpful if you have some computer experience, particularly on Apple Macs, but this not essential.

You will need be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and be prepared to take part in group discussion. You should be happy using numbers and able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each week there will be a demonstration of a particular aspect of Final Cut Pro X. This is then followed by an exercise, allowing for some individual tutorial support. Periodically there will be forum sessions where we will look at each other’s work to discuss different aspects of editing and filmmaking and the post-production process. Asking questions and commenting is encouraged at all times. Handbooks, manuals and worksheets are available.
Please note we will be working on Apple Mac computers.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Our high definition cameras and the latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course. It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC-formatted hard drives can be read by Apple Mac computers, but not written to). CDs/DVDs are also available, and you will have your own account in class where you can accumulate your work from week to week.
You might want to consider purchasing books related to the subject of filmmaking and editing. We will provide you with a range of hand-outs, and you can make use of books in the library.

If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, Build students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer. Your tutor will advise you on what you should buy. You will need to show your enrolment receipt in-store to receive your discount. When I've finished, what course can I do next?

My son Simon, aged 19 with high functioning autism recently asked if I would support him on the beginners' course in Final Cut Pro X (stage 1) as he was keen to learn to edit film, so he could post clips on his film review blog. Over the years, I have helped him in class many times, but I have rarely been lucky enough to sit in and listen to such an experienced and engaging teacher as this one. It's easy to believe that the tutor is a top professional film editor, but perhaps her greatest skill is her wonderful ability to convey her knowledge to others, starting with the basics. Her relaxed, patient and entertaining teaching style means that a 3 hour class flies by, even for me, a technophobe with no interest at all in editing. By the end of the first session I was captivated! And like all inspiring mentors, her contagious enthusiasm leaves her students feeling that, however daunting, with enough practise, they too will be able to master the techniques of great film editing.
