Description

What is the course about?

Learn how to develop your ideas into a coherent picture book dummy. Over the course you will work with a variety of media to improve your own personal visual language and deepen your understanding of the relationship between illustration and text. You will also have the opportunity to expand your awareness of current publishing demands, target age ranges and global markets, helping you to better prepare for the competitive world of publishing.

What will we cover?

• Expand your knowledge of media
• Learn to apply useful publishing terminology
• Layout your book idea into a coherent form for publishers
• Examine target age ranges, gender and culture specificity
• Develop a finished artwork spread.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Recognise the important relationship between illustration and text
• Be aware of the parameters and scope of the picture book
• Understand how to layout a picture book dummy
• Be aware how to present to publishers
• Develop a rough into a finished spread
• Understand the varying demands of publishers in relation to age range, gender and markets.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is intended as a follow up to VK 503, though not exclusively. Experience of illustration is not necessary but would be an advantage.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will combine demonstration, group discussion and critique, and individual tuition. You will be encouraged to contribute ideas and present your work. Homework will include research and image development.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course fee covers basic materials and equipment. It would be very useful for you to bring the following: an A3 sketchbook, a notebook, B and 2B pencils, an eraser and a sharpener or scalpel.

If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, Build students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer. Your tutor will advise you on what you should buy. You will need to show your enrolment receipt in-store to receive your discount. Visit the Charing Cross shop at 13 Charing Cross Road WC2H 0EP or find your local shop at www.cassart.co.uk. *Terms and conditions apply, visit www.cassart.co.uk/students.
