Designing textiles using Photoshop: stage 1

Create patterns and designs for printed textiles which may then be printed onto cloth. This course is ideal for beginners in Photshop who are textile artsits or designers, or for anyone interested in exploring pattern, colour and texture.


What is the course about?

This introductory course is designed for students, teachers, designers and textile artists who would like to investigate to creative potential of Photoshop for textile design.

This is a creative course that covers the basic technical Photoshop knowledge required to create textile designs, alongside exploring the design process, colour, texture and patter.

There will be the opportunity to develop these skills further on the follow on course VX251 / VX253 Designing textiles using Photoshop: stage 2.

What will we cover?

The course covers
- developing motifs and designs by hand and on screen
- scanning and downloading images
- working with photographs and drawings / paintings / textiles
- creating patterns and textures
- image manipulation
- placement patterns, repeat pattern and colourways
- file management and saing of digital designs
- printing possibilities of textiles - on paper and cloth

You will be taught step by step instructions on how to design and develop textile designs using Photoshop. You will work on a project of your choice, relating to your own favoured theme, with guidance from the tutor.

As this is a short and intensive course, you will need to arrive prepared on your first session with a selection of images / photos / drawings / ideas to work with to enable you to be able to work with your own designs.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Produce a portfolio of textile designs as a body of digitally saved work for future development
- Produce some designs as prints on paper
- Produce evidence of image and design research and design development
- Work confidently and competently using a computer and Photoshop for textile design.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners are welcome at this introductory level. Working in Photoshop, you are encouraged to develop your own design work through following the course and instructions. If you already have some knowledge of the programme you can work at your own level.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through visual and technical demonstrations and supporting handouts, samples and visual inspiration, short lectures, preactical exercises, group tutorials and one to one support.

You will be given weekly homework tasks and are encouraged to practice on Photoshop and develop designs between classes.

Please note the Build uses Apple Mac computers in Digital Arts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to arrive for all classes with:
USB memory stick with at least 4GB of memory
A4 folder for handouts, notes and design printouts.
A selection of images / photos / drawings / ideas to work on. These can be your drawings, photographs, paintings, fabric samples, designs and images but can alos be colours, textures and patterns that insipre you.
The more content you bring, the more opportunity you have to learn the process. If you are able to, bring the images on a USB stick.
The latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

VX253 Designing textiles using Photoshop: stage 2 is designed as a follow on from this course and affords you the opportunity to develop your textile design skills using Photoshop further.
