An introduction to three dimensional model making, from a variety of simple materials to support design development. This course has applications for all 3D disciplines: interior design, architecture, model making, product design and photographic/art projects.


What is the course about?

An introduction to three dimensional model making, using a variety of simple materials and techniques to achieve effective 3D models, suitable for architecture, interior design or photographic/ art projects. This course is for beginners, with projects for advanced students.

What will we cover?

- Working out the scale and size of the model
- Planning the construction
- Realising supportive drawings
- A short introduction to Sketch Up and its use for model making
- Model making with a variety of simple materials such as wood and card.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- use drawing to develop and communicate your model design
- build a simple model to scale
- use a variety of materials and techniques for model making
- follow good studio practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No particular skills are needed but some knowledge of Art and Design and Maths will be useful. This course is for anyone with an interest in interior design, architectural and 3D design and model making for animation or photography.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.


How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be a mixture of lectures, work demonstrations, one to one tuition, practical work on individual sample projects and informal group discussions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Most basic materials and equipment are provided. Useful tools to bring with you are a craft knife, a scalpel handle, 300mm steel rule, 150mm steel rule, 100mm engineers square. You should to bring a hardback sketchbook or sketchpad for idea development and a notebook for documentation. You might wish to bring/ purchase additional materials during the course as advised by your tutor.
