A brief introduction to the history of Deaf people in Britain and the development of British Sign Language. You can further explore this fascinating one day course by joining our deaf history part one course. This course is taught in BSL.


What is the course about?

You will find out about the general history of deaf people in Britain.

What will we cover?

- the history of BSL and the manual alphabet in Britain
- the history of deaf education in Britain.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- describe the evolution of the manual alphabet
- describe the evolution of BSL.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

BSL users with Level 2 and above are welcome - the course will be taught in BSL.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- demonstration
- discussion
- pair / group work
- question and answer.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You are advised to bring a folder, paper and pens for taking notes.

I had Peter Brown for this course. His knowledge is extensive and his interest infectious. I enjoyed this class so much I bought several books on Deaf History. It was also very, very useful when I had to do a BSL Level 3 presentation. This was a day very well spent.
