Want to improve your confidence in photographing at night? Join our fascinating workshop exploring locations in the city that change dramatically from daylight to darkness. Learn essential techniques to capture light effectively, go out on location in daylight then return later to shoot as natural light turns to artificial, creating beautifully atmospheric images.

Description

What is the course about?

The course is about using different techniques to photograph changing lighting circumstances, and practising these on location in places that offer dramatic changes in lighting between day and night. It will develop your technical skills and confidence with expert guidance on long exposures, white balance, choosing a lens, planning a shoot, and processing your images.

What will we cover?

- Long exposure techniques
- White balance under natural and artificial light
- Identifying use of appropriate lens
- Planning the shoot
- Photographers’ rights to shoot in public
- Uploading images to Adobe Bridge and checking focus.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- produce a series of images demonstrating different lighting
- demonstrate safe working procedure in public
- identify the optimum time for photographing at night
- plan your shoot to maximise the lighting opportunities.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an intermediate class. To get the most from the course, students should be computer literate at a basic level and have control of the manual functions of their cameras. Please note that you will be using Apple Macs, not PCs, although all the software used on this course is cross-platform. If you have never used a computer before, please consider taking the course 'Introduction to using Apple Mac computers' which runs each term.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through a structured programme of lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises on location and image-based discussions. The photography studio uses a computer projector for presentations and viewing of images. Each student will have their own computer to work on.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your digital camera. You may wish to bring some images on a memory stick for discussion, and a pen and notebook as you are encouraged to take notes. Build has digital SLR cameras and tripods you may borrow during lesson time.

If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, Build students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer. Your tutor will advise you on what you should buy. You will need to show your enrolment receipt in-store to receive your discount. Visit the Charing Cross shop at 13 Charing Cross Road WC2H 0EP or find your local shop at www.cassart.co.uk. *Terms and conditions apply, visit www.cassart.co.uk/students.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Please look in the prospectus in the Photography section for specialist and practical Photography courses and in the Visual Arts section for computer courses including advanced Photoshop.

General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.
