What is the course about?

The basics and beyond of crochet.

You will be taught the basic crochet techniques and and will make swatches of each to practise and build confidence in the skills. The course will cover basic pattern reading, pattern abbreviations and terminology and take a look at chart reading.

What students liked most about this course run in 2015/16:

"Excellent, clear teaching in an encouraging and supportive atmosphere. The recaps have enabled the new concepts to be grasped and when help is needed, the ethos of the class has always been supportive. The pace of the sessions are excellent - you achieve results that you didn't think you could!"

What will we cover?

- A variety of basic stitches using 4-4.5 mm hook and basic DK light coloured yarn
- You will learn how to make a chain, double crochet, half treble, treble, double treble and slip stitch
- You will learn how to stripe, work straight and in the round and how to increase and decrease.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Demonstrate knowledge of basic crochet techniques
- Demonstrate confidence in working with crochet
- Develop and produce several sample swatches of the basic techniques and swatches
- Understand the importance of the correct tension and begin to read and understand crochet patterns.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for beginners, no knowledge of crochet is necessary, and is in fact preferable if you are to make the
most of the course structure.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and health
and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and
be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be hands on, with learning achieved through repetition and practicing the basic techniques of crochet. You will be taught by demonstration, group and individual tuition. You will be taken through the techniques with a group demonstration and then individually as necessary.

Each separate technique will be practiced and then a sample made for reference in a file or sketchbook. Each
student is encouraged to begin a crochet techniques folder or book in which to keep samples, swatches, handouts
and any note taking you find useful.

There will be recommendations for relevant books and shops and a website list which will help develop your skills
outside the class. Students will be encouraged to practice each new technique throughout the week in between the
classes to ensure progression.

Advice will be given on other courses and classes to develop skills learnt.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You are asked to bring at least a 4 and/or 4.5 mm hook and 2 balls of DK weight yarn (one ball of cream or natural coloured yarn and one ball of a light contrast colour yarn). It is preferable that you choose a yarn with some wool, cotton or natural fibre content for ease of use.

Sketch books and/or a folder are also advisable so you can collect visual information, store swatches, record any
new techniques and collect hand outs.

Digital cameras are also useful to record any new stitches/fabric and mark making done during the course.

If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, Build students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer. Your tutor will advise you on what you should buy. You will need to show your enrolment receipt in-store to receive your discount.
