Course Dates: 18/01/20 - 01/02/20
Time: 10:30 - 16:30
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Anne-Marie Foster

Produce a stand-out, experimental sketchbook of printmaking ideas. Working in and from your sketchbook, explore and develop printmaking and mixed media techniques that reflect your ideas and introduce exciting new ways of working. Create an exciting resource to inform your printmaking, painting or collage work, or let the sketchbook be an artwork in itself.

What is the course about?

You will use your sketchbook to develop ideas and to experiment with mixed media and printmaking techniques. You will explore drawing, monoprinting, relief printing and collage in both black and white and colour. You will develop imagery which reflects your interests and ideas. You will be working on location and in the studio from primary and secondary sources in the pursuit of a personal line of inquiry.

What will we cover?

You will shown how other artists have used mixed media techniques in sketchbooks for generating ideas. You will be able to develop your drawing and printmaking skills and ideas by experimenting with various media and techniques. You will be encouraged to develop a personal line of inquiry from your findings.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Use a sketchbook to develop ideas
- Experiment with mixed media techniques.
- Work from primary and secondary source material.
- Assess your own progress through discussion and reflection.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is designed for all levels of ability from beginners to advanced learners who are willing to
experiment and develop their interests in mixed media/printmaking processes and techniques.

All students would benefit from bringing images /ideas as a starting point. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations of methods and techniques will be given as well as practical exercises and handouts. There will be one to one tuition and informal group discussion, presentation and review. You will be shown examples of print and mixed media as well as other appropriate images and influences.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your own sketchbook. If you wish to buy your own materials to use at home, you will be advised during the course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Other courses in printmaking run throughout the year and you are encouraged to build on your previous experience by joining one of these courses or you may be encouraged to strengthen your skills in related areas, particularly drawing, on many other courses at Build.

General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.
