Time: 10:00 - 17:00

Using a wide range of mixed media, examine the relevance of collage today, its routes through history and its creative potential. Practical workshops include: found object and paper collage, assemblage, image transformation, metamorphosis and text.

What is the course about?

The course will act as a celebration of collage, deriving from the French word,"Coller - meaning to glue". Contemporary collage will examine a wide range of methods and materials to explore the unlikely juxtapositions, assemblages and re-contextualisations that are cut and paste within the genre.
We will seek to examine it's relevance in Contemporary Art practice, it's influence on Modernism and it's routes through Art History. Though primarily grounded in the tactile and the two dimensional, projects will attempt to outreach it's three dimensional counterparts and interdisciplinary cousins. Encountered in 12th century China, once the plaything of Marie Antoinette, the brainchild of Braque and Picasso and the engine room of the avant-garde…
Collage has gone on to influence all the Arts and the multifaceted digital world we now live in.

What will we cover?

Working with a wide range of mixed media the course will set up a series of "Pictorial Collisions", covering found object and paper collage, assemblage, decoupage, bricolage, decollage, dechirage, depiliage, photomontage,
box assemblage, frottage, cubomania, image transformation and desecration, metamorphosis, text, reliefs and wall assemblage.

Contemporary collage will also reference photomontage projections, Victorian combination printing, painting from nouveau realism to pop to now, graffiti, tattoos, poetry, news reportage and fakes, fluxus, dada and neodada, installation, site specific, performance, film, sound, design, fashion and rap.

This course concerns contemporary practice and debate. As such you can expect to be stimulated and challenged by some of the ideas and images discussed.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Develop a wide range of skills and approaches relating to collage.
- Recognise the relationship collage has upon the making and meaning of the altered image.
- Contextualise collage within it's art historical evolution and impact today.
- Establish a large lexicon of images and materials in which to experiment with in the future.
- Employ many layers of intuition, irrationality, nonsense, logic and reason upon the process of making and conceiving collage.

Students will be offered the opportunity to create a collage book under the title "Scrap Art" during the intervening weeks.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Superb tutor with such passion and knowledge and a fun and charming way of passing on his expertise. Each day covers a different theme like collage, assemblage etc. The day starts with a presentation running through a variety of artists and then a demo by the tutor after which you get down to work. Anything goes. It's an opportunity to get messy and work big which I can't do in my home studio. I would say that my art practice moved into a different level as a result of his teaching.
