Description

What is the course about?

An all round introduction to the world of specialty coffee. Focusing on the origins of coffee from all over the world we will explore the worlds of farming, processing, drying and roasting and the techniques that are used. Once we have established where our coffees come from and what determines such diverse levels of flavour, we will move on to tasting and brewing our own delicious coffee. Our specialty coffee workshop is an in-depth introduction to the processes that are involved in getting great tasting coffee to our cups. You will learn the background information long before the brewing begins and learn the intricacies of how to taste and brew great coffee for ourselves at home.

What will we cover?

Coffee cultivation, harvesting, processing, drying and roasting.
Coffee regions - characteristics of coffees from all over the world
Identifying flavours and explaining why they exist
How to taste coffee - coffee cupping
How to make great coffee: coffee brewing using a variety of different methods.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Describe where coffee comes from and how it is processed
Identify coffees from all over the world
Identify coffee taste profiles and characteristics
Cup and taste coffee
Brew coffee via your favourite methods
Experience coffee in more depth when visiting your favourite coffee shops.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No particular skills are needed – just an interest in coffee and a bottle of water to clear the palate between tasting different coffees.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Mini lecture, discussion, group activities, demonstration & practice
The first section of the course will be theory based and will include viewing presentations from the tutor, taking notes and participating in group based activities.
The second half of the course is practical. Students will be asked to follow the instructions of the tutor to brew and taste coffee.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No other costs. You are encouraged to bring a pen and notebook.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Tea tasting courses, or try one of our other food and drink courses, such as wine, cider or beer tasting.
