Description

What is the course about?

"Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Economic Migrants in the Mediterranean, from 750 BCE" by Hugh Bowden, King’s College London.

What will we cover?

For people to be driven from their homes by war, poverty or natural disasters is nothing new. For several centuries in the first millennium BCE the Mediterranean basin saw movements of populations in different directions as people looked for a new life in a new location. It was a period of violence and social upheaval. The lecture explores what was involved in these movements, and aims to reconstruct something of the experience of migrants over 2,500 years ago.

Hugh Bowden is Professor of Ancient History at King’s College London and also Head of the Classics Department. His research is focused on the practice of ancient religion, in particular in ancient Greece.
