What is the course about?
This course is about improving your knowledge and appreciation of Greek in one of its greatest playwrights. It is about deepening your understanding of the language, and enlarging your enjoyment.
What will we cover?
We shall be reading ‘Oedipus the King’ by Sophocles, and practising grammar with translation from English into Greek. Language work will include the indefinite construction and temporal clauses.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- read and translate with confidence and enjoyment
- demonstrate an extensive knowledge of Sophocles’ vocabulary & style
- recognise in Greek and write sentences using the indefinite construction, and clauses of time.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have studied Greek for about four years. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Each student will be assigned a portion of text to prepare each week, together with some grammar sentences. There will be general discussion on all points arising from the text. Homework: 1.5 - 2 hours per week.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Oedipus Rex, Sophocles (any edition); ‘Writing Greek’ by Anderson & Taylor (BCP).
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Any one of a number of Classical Greek 5 courses in September.
