Classical Greek 5 lower: module 3

Course Dates: 30/04/19 - 02/07/19
Time: 10:30 - 11:30
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Tutor: Ian Murray

Continue the transition into reading unadapted Greek, while continuing to revise more complex aspects of grammar.

What is the course about?

On this upper intermediate course you will be reading prose passages of lightly adapted Greek, and revising grammar, with translation both from Greek and into Greek.

What will we cover?

Continuing with ‘Greek Beyond GCSE’ by Taylor, starting at around Chapter 4, we shall be studying
- verbs with stems in -e
- particles
- the indefinite construction
- the accusative absolute construction with impersonal verbs
- the articular infinitive (gerund, or verbal noun).

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- use and translate all of the above in Greek sentences
- recognise these features of Greek in the prose of Herodotus and Thucydides.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have studied Greek for three years and should have completed Classical Greek 5 Lower - module 2, or have equivalent experience. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Whole class work; translation, grammar instruction, grammatical exercises. Homework: about 2-3 hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

‘Greek Beyond GCSE’ by J Taylor pub BCP (Bloomsbury).

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Classical Greek 5.
