What is the course about?

This course will enable students to combine and use previous practical training in voice, movement, improvisation and characterisation in the context of performance before an audience. The objective is to form a company that is governed by professional values and achieves professional standards. The play this term is .

What will we cover?

The process from initial rehearsals to performance including:
1. Initial trust-building exercises to gain group coherence.
2. Familiarisation with text and director's interpretation of plot in terms of themes and performance style.
3. Character-building, including character history and motivation.
4. Improvisation to achieve further insight to text, plot and character.
5. Developing appropriate character voice, movement and relationships.
6. Blocking, technical and dress rehearsals, performances.

Please note that acting classes by their very nature can involve exercises and the exploration of material that some students may find challenging.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Engage effectively with the process and structure, from first rehearsal to performance.
Develop character within this process, contributing to a coherent production.
Demonstrate the director’s, writer’s and the collective concept through practical application of rehearsal work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Entry is by audition. This will take the form of a group workshop. You will also be required to perform a speech, from memory, from a contemporary play. The audition will be on Sunday the 6th October. Please be advised that you may be required to stay for most of the day.

Your suitability and skill level will be assessed at audition. 100 % attendance at all rehearsals is essential.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen actively and communicate clearly.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and analyse scripts to find meaning and clarity.
• Take notes.
• Use numbers to recognise rhythm.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn through practical work including trust exercises, improvisation, text analysis, character exercises and scene work. Work at home will be necessary in terms of line-learning and character analysis. You will need to be free to rehearse and perform during production week (please see dates above).

HEALTH CHECK
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may be required to purchase a play script. Each course is awarded a modest budget for the production. The creative team and the director are aware of the budget when selecting the play to cover any production costs including props and costume. From time to time students have chosen to augment their costume and personal props with items from their own wardrobe and possessions. This is perfectly acceptable if you should choose to do this. However, please be aware that you do so at your own risk and Build cannot take responsibility for said items. We also have no storage provision for the safekeeping of your personal items beyond the dates of the production.

I learnt a huge amount and the tutor was the most wonderful director any of us could have possibly hoped to work with. The passion and commitment she showed throughout the six weeks was phenomenal and she steered a very happy and very committed ship towards a fantastic outcome.

For me personally, playing Celia was something of a life changing experience. I feel that I was given the chance and space to grow and develop as an actor and performer in a way that I had not before, and I will forever be immensely grateful for having being given this wonderful opportunity. More generally, and as someone who has now performed in several Build Rep Company plays, I feel very strongly that this is such a fantastic aspect of the Build Drama School offering. In the wider absence today of the traditional rep company training ground within the industry, this course offers a unique working environment enabling the actor to gain real experience of working in a professional environment and hone their craft. As someone who began their training at Build, and will in September be starting at RADA, I can honestly say that without the experience of the Rep Company plays I have performed in, I would not have developed my performance and acting skills to anywhere near the level I have. I have learnt more by performing in these plays than just about anywhere else and feel they provide a crucial training ground for any serious
actor: the Rep Company allows us to take what we learn in the classroom and develop it further and put it into practise (which is ultimately what this is all about!). I have learnt a huge amount through being in the Rep Company plays - the quality of Petina's direction and teaching is an absolute credit to the Drama School:
without these experiences I really do doubt I would be going to RADA.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this course to anyone who is serious about entering the industry and wanting to develop and hone their acting skills. If anything I would recommend that the rehearsal time is extended and the runs are longer: it was such a shame that Her Naked Skin ended after just 4 shows! And the time pressures of just 18 rehearsals were immense (not to mention the fact that we were working across multiple studios rather than in the theatre itself!). I can't think of anywhere else where its possible to participate in plays of this quality within the context of a training/professional environment. It is a unique offering that Build has and I feel that you should be looking for ways to really make the most of this fantastic training ground. I will always be grateful for the experiences and opportunities you have given me, and to the tutor - and the other directors I've worked with - for the wonderful training and teaching I have been given.

Tutor Biographies
Gemma Kerr

Gemma is an experienced acting teacher and theatre director. She has run her own company and worked on productions of different scales, including many drama school productions. Her recent production of To Have to Shoot Irishmen by Lizzie Nunnery ran at Omnibus Theatre in October 2018, gaining 4-star reviews in The Guardian and The Stage, before a national tour including dates at the Liverpool Everyman. In November 2017 Gemma was the second recipient of the Air B2B residency offered by People’s Palace Projects and the British Council, and spent a month in Rio de Janeiro as the artist in residence at Casa Rio. Gemma is an Associate Artist of Omnibus Theatre, and Associate Director of Forward Theatre Project. She runs High Hearted Theatre with Marcelo Dos Santos and works as a Script Reader for the Literary Department at the Royal Court Theatre London and for the Bruntwood Prize. Gemma is an Associate Teacher at RADA, and also teaches and directs at Build and Identity School of Acting. She is a commissioned artist for Mothers Who Make, developing a podcast about taboos surrounding women’s bodies.
