Choir at lunchtime

Course Dates: 13/01/20 - 30/03/20
Time: 12:15 - 13:15
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Richard Hartley Wilson

Come and spend your lunchtime singing. It's good for the mind, body and spirit. Sing music from across all genres, have fun and leave with a spring in your step. There's no better pick-me-up at lunchtime!

What is the course about?

This is a group class for everyone to come and sing together as a choir during a lunchtime. Learn to harmonise and blend as an ensemble and have fun while you're doing it. It's been proven that singing in a choir improves your health and well being, so why not get involved? The choir has a professional piano accompanist and towards the end of each module there is an opportunity to give a short informal performance in the college café.

What will we cover?

- A vocal warm up is used at the beginning
- Some basic technique and breathing exercises designed to help you get the most out of your voice
- The music chosen on each module will cross several genres so there is something for everyone. From classical choral works to folk, pop and musical theatre.
- Repertoire may include occasional sacred items from various traditions
- Repertoire will include part singing.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Feel confident about singing as part of a choir
- Know more about choral repertoire in a number of genres
- Perform in simple 2- or 3- part harmonies
- Have a greater understanding of how the voice works.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for all levels from beginners to those with some experience. You do not need to read music but you will perform songs using sheet music notation so you should be curious to learn a bit about reading music.
You do not need to have trained your voice before, but we do ask that you can hear notes played on the piano clearly and repeat them back at the same pitch.

If you are unsure which course is best for you, please come to an advice session and bring a piece to play. Our teachers will help you select a class at the right level.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The session will consist of group work, demonstration and lectures from the teacher. There will also be lots of rehearsal time for each song either part-by part or all together as you learn harmonies.
You will be asked to rehearse your part (and memorise words) between lessons
You may like to study recordings of songs to help you learn them.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a folder to keep your music in order, pencil and perhaps a Dictaphone to record your vocal line if you find that helpful.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can stay in Choir at lunchtime for a long as you wish. There is different repertoire each term.

I would say that you will learn how to practise vocal chord exercises, how to breath and how to do musical scales in many different ways. The songs that we have learnt to sing have been fantastic. I would never have known some of the songs without doing this class. I have really enjoyed learning something totally new.
