Develop your fluency on this course taught in Chinese, with the emphasis on speaking and listening. Suitable if you have studied Chinese (Mandarin) for three years or have a fairly good command of the language.

Description

What is the course about?

The course aims to build on the language and skills that you have acquired in the previous three years and to extend your range of vocabulary and communicative competence. It also aims to consolidate your reading and writing of Chinese characters.

What will we cover?

Contents: actions related to direction; personal interests related to daily life such as hobbies, health and traditional food, likes and dislikes.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-Follow directions
-Pass on a message.
-Talk about your hobbies: the books you like to read, the style clothes you like, etc.
-Talk about the food you like and dislike.
-Recognise 120 new characters.
-Use different sentence patterns within spoken and written forms.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable if you have completed Chinese 3 module 1 or have an equivalent intermediate level of Chinese. A working knowledge of 400-500 characters would be an advantage.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will also need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g using money, telling the time, reading timetables). It is essential that you have a knowledge of basic 9such as nouns and verbs) and more intermediate grammar terminology.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Chinese is not an easy subject, especially the writing, but this course is such fun and so well taught that it will make you will want to excel and enable you to do so.
