Course Dates: 19/09/19 - 05/12/19
Time: 18:00 - 21:00
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Tutors:

Get inspired by the age-old crafts of stone and wood carving, learn carving techniques and create your own small carving in wood or stone. Suitable for anyone from beginners to experienced carvers, this course will explore the characteristics of stone and wood, lead you through the steps of design and carving, and encourage you to explore and develop your ideas and try more experimental techniques.

Description

What is the course about?

Explore the ancient arts of stone carving and wood carving, from the initial conception of ideas and developing a design, through to carving techniques and creating a full sculpture in limestone or wood. Those with no sculptural experience will be led through the process stage by stage. Those with more experience will be encouraged to stretch their ideas, reflect on how to improve their designs and given the opportunity to try more experimental techniques.

What will we cover?

The initial parts of the course will focus on understanding the characteristics of wood and stone as materials, and you will be introduced to the work of many sculptors, both contemporary and historical. Time will then be spent making several maquettes (small models) in an easily-carvable material, or modelled in clay or plasticine, before embarking on a piece in stone or wood. Along with techniques of chiselling, you will also be made aware of possibilities for splitting and bolting stone and incorporating other materials or objects. These techniques will be taught and explored as your carving progresses. We will also cover safe working practice and tool maintenance.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- develop ideas for carvings by making maquettes
- demonstrate an understanding of basic carving techniques
- demonstrate some knowledge of stone and wood sculpture, both historical and contemporary
- demonstrate knowledge as to how to maintain tools.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced carvers.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations, practical activities, group discussions and individual tuition.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic tools and equipment are provided and up to a £15 block of stone or wood is included within the course fee. Larger blocks of stone or wood are available and the difference can be purchased at cost price. You must wear stout shoes for protection against accidental droppages.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The Build sculpture department offers a whole selection of courses that will allow you to progress from beginner to advanced and develop a range of techniques. You may like to progress onto the year-long Build Sculpture course which helps you to build your own individual sculpture practice, or sign up to a short course specialising in a particular approach or skill - we offer everything from working in wire or plaster through to 'experimental sculpture' and prop making. Please ask your tutor for advice or browse the Build website or prospectus for inspiration.

General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.
