Perfect for those who have taken our beginners course and those with some experience. Take your burlesque dance, movement and characterisation skills to the next level!

What is the course about?

Take your burlesque stage skills to the next level, including your burlesque dance and movement, characterisation and stage presence, costuming, prop work and the art of the tease.
The course will take the form of three workshops each exploring a different facet of burlesque technique and style. Certain workshops require you to bring basic costume elements. Do not be put off by this, what they look like is not important , the emphasis is on skill development not appearance.

What will we cover?

We will explore the key influences on contemporary burlesque performance and iconography from the showgirl work of the Ziegfeld Follies to the influence of Bettie Page, Bob Fosse and Sally Rand. Each week we will explore important tropes within burlesque and our continuing focus will be on developing performance style and technical prowess. Sessions will include work on costume manipulation, fan-dance (fans are provided), character work, choreography, and the art of pin-up.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Recognise your personal tastes amongst the many styles and forms of burlesque.
Identify the icons of burlesque, modern and/or historical, that inspire your burlesque performance.
Discover your personal freedom of expression through increased awareness of posture, style and movement.
Demonstrate your stage presence, deportment and walking style.
Handle various elements of costume with confidence.
Perform playful, elegant and sophisticated routines.
Recognise your ability to tantalise and tease.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an improvers course. It is expected that you have completed a previous Build burlesque course, or have some previous experience of burlesque/dance/performance. Beginners are welcome but we will be moving at a faster than a beginners class.

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In class you will work as a whole group, in small groups and individually.

This is a dance and movement based course. You may be asked to participate in rigorous physical activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need warm up kit - shorts and a vest top are ideal, also bring a bottle of water. Most weeks you will need high heeled shoes that are easy to remove and that are comfortable to move and dance in. Hold up stockings are also an essential for most classes - get 15 or 20 denier as these are more robust!

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Speak to the teacher or contact the drama, dance and speech department for advice and guidance.

General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.

There is something in this for everyone, from the person who just loves the style and music to someone with a performance background.
The tutor is highly knowledgeable and encouraging at the same time.
As well as getting some great background on its history and roots, it's also brilliant fun. I leave each class with a real sense of achievement as I improve and literally stretch myself.
