What is the course about?
This course is for Deaf people and it will help you to develop confidence and practice everyday BSL at beginner and intermediate level. You will build on and expand your skills ready for the next level of BSL. This course is not assessed with an exam but you will receive feedback from your tutor and a Build certificate of attendance.
What will we cover?
You will learn BSL communication skills at beginner level relating to the following topic areas:
Eating and Drinking
Interests and activities
BSL grammatical structure and features.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Understand and use a range of words and sentences in BSL
Take part in conversations in BSL
Give and understand directions in BSL
Give and understand descriptions in BSL.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You will need to be able to read basic words during the class. You will write down briefly what you have learned. Your tutor will help if this is difficult.
Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview.
Autumn term: come to the drop-in session at Build on Wednesday afternoons 2-3pm for an interview (term time only). Please ask reception for a room number.

DVDs and books are in the library at Build.
BSL for Dummies book can be purchased at a special price, subject to availability.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
If you have completed this course, you can progress to a Level 1 or Level 2 in BSL course.
