What is the course about?
This discipline cross over between Design and Bookbinding, is an exploration of content and
structure, layout and presentation. Initially working with collage you will develop your creative
thinking and hands-on skills looking at layout and scale. Each section is taught by tutors from the specific area.
A great starting point for anyone interested in finding innovative solutions to presenting design, art or photographic work in the form of a book.
What will we cover?
- Hands-on exercises exploring letterform and layout.
- How to plan and execute binding to showcase design work.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Distinguish between several types of layout design.
- Draw attention to the structural elements of a book by using exposed sewing techniques
- Integrate single section pamphlets and loose leaves into book structure
- Design, plan and create a finished bound book.
- Apply the acquired techniques to your creative practice.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This unique course is open to all, including complete beginners or anyone interested in trying out different approaches to presenting design/artwork in a structured book. A chance to pursue your passion with like-minded people. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through a series of practical exercises, presentations, individual tutorials as well as group discussion. Some extra work maybe required between classes.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please bring a sharp pencil and apron. All other materials are provided. You may like to bring in additional samples of your own work to incorporated into your chosen book structure.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You can move onto VD292 'Bookbinding: learn to bind artists books' or VD290 'Book Arts: creative paper engineering'.
