What is the course about?
A short course to introduce Blues playing to competent pianists. Expand your blues language, and spend time improvising in the style.
What will we cover?
- 12 bar tunes
- blues scale "licks"
- creating and playing strong basslines
- right-hand improvisation technique.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Play 2-handed accompaniment for a singer or instrumentalist
- Understand the principles of blues harmony
- Improvise over a 12-bar sequence.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Players with decent keyboard harmony and/or pop piano skills will get the most benefit from this short course.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Each player will be at a digital piano, the aim is to practise together as much as possible. The tutor will set exercises, and you will be reading music samples and chord symbols. Some work by ear only.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please bring manuscript, pencil, and an audio recording device (optional).
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Pop piano, blues or jazz piano study.
