What is the course about?
Learning to play Blues Harmonica as a beginner. Learn skills and techniques that will help you improve your playing. Also an overview of the history of Blues Harp and how it has been applied in popular music.
What will we cover?
The techniques and theory of Blues Harmonica from authentic Chicago blues to Blues harp in other styles of music such as country.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Know a range of techniques and licks that will help you improvise and play with blues and other styles of popular music.
You will know how relative keys and pitches work and have a basic knowledge of cross harp and straight harp techniques.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The Blues harmonica is often used as a complimentary instrument with musicians particularly guitarists and singers, so the course is of great use to people with those skills. However, no prior skills are necessary often than an enthusiasm for music.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught in an immersive way with the tutor often playing a live backing track for students to play along with. Instrumentalists are welcome to bring in their instruments to these sessions, and there will be a drum kit, piano and amp provided.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Students are asked to provide a major diatonic harmonica in the key of C. These cost in the region of £20-£35. The tutor recommends the Lee Oskar brand by Tombo ( approx. £25) from music shops and online.
