Course Dates: 02/05/19 - 04/07/19
Time: 12:15 - 13:45
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Tutor: Heather Longman

Year one of our solo-singing programme. Suitable for singers of all styles of music and taught by a classically trained teacher. Gain a fundamental grasp of vocal technique and an understanding of the level of work involved to progress as a singer. This is the final module of a one year foundation level course.

Description

What is the course about?

This course will give you a grounding in the basics of a healthy vocal technique and provide experience of singing solo in a supportive environment. It will also help you to have a realistic understanding of the level of work and commitment needed in order to progress as a solo performer.

In module 3 we will build on what has been learned in the first two modules (posture and voice production) and begin to learn how your voice can change with different genres.

What will we cover?

- Basic exercises and techniques to help with vocal development.
- Relationship between the voice and body (e.g. posture, breath).
- Guidance on choosing suitable repertoire.
- How to manage practice throughout the week.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Apply your knowledge of the basics of singing
- Use body posture as an asset in singing
- Sing simple songs rhythmically and in tune
- Perform simple songs and exercises in front of the class.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

- An ability to pitch notes from both piano and voice (i.e. be able to hear a note and sing it back correctly).
- Enough confidence to sing a simple exercise in front of a class.
- Some familiarity with music notation, e.g. you should have some idea of note values and key and time signatures.
- You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

If you are new to Build singing classes, please take a moment to read our blog: Choosing a singing class at City lit which lists our full sequence of singing classes. You could also drop in to one of our advice sessions where we can hear you sing and help you choose the right course. Please bring a piece to sing with simple piano accompaniment.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Vocal exercises and songs which may be in a variety of languages and styles, starting in the group context, progressing to solo singing
- Through demonstration, lecture and discussion arising from work in progress.
- You will be encouraged to listen to each other and give feedback in order to increase your awareness of vocal and performance techniques, and are encouraged to practise daily.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A notebook and pencil for taking notes, a folder, sheet music as required, and a course book as advised. You are encouraged to acquire copies of music to be studied during the year. Music may be purchased new or second-hand and/or available from local libraries. Westminster Central Music Library (Victoria) and the Barbican Music Library have very comprehensive collections. Suitable scores may also be available from http://imslp.org/.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

We recommend that you now move on to: Develop your singing technique: module 1

However, you may choose to repeat any modules from ‘Basic technique for singing’ if you wish to further consolidate your skills at this level. You may also choose Rock. Pop and Soul Singing 1.

If you need help learning to read music please consider supplementing your singing studies with ‘Musicianship 1: listening and reading, pitch and rhythm’. These musicianship courses are ideally taken in conjunction with a singing / instrumental class and will help you learn much faster.

General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.

More voice improvement following 317A and B and learning songs now becoming easier. Again many useful singing tips and feedback.

Excellent course following on from 317A. It would be very difficult not to improve hugely with [the teacher's] patient teaching and encouragement. We all did!

"Enjoyment" given four stars only because of the nerves involved in singing solo in front of the class. Over the year that has got much, much better (the nerves, that is!).

I came to singing after retirement, after a life time of hang ups about my inability to sing. [The teacher's] "Absolute Beginners" class followed by this Basic course has been a revelation and, in its way, life changing.
