Course Dates: 16/09/19 - 09/12/19
Time: 15:30 - 16:30
Location: KS - Keeley Street

As we age our sense of balance tends to worsen. Join this introduction to exercise to help maintain/improve balance. We will work on balance, strengthening relevant muscles, increasing mobility and improving posture.

What is the course about?

This course will introduce participants to exercise that has been designed to help improve strength and balance in older adults. Options will be given so that you can work at a level you feel comfortable with.

We include working on strengthening muscles to aid bone health and postural stability as well as various balance challenging activities. Some of the exercises will be carried out seated and others standing on the spot or moving about the room.

What will we cover?

Common causes of worsening balance in older adults.
How exercise can help
Practising balance and strength exercises at a level appropriate for you.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Give at least three reasons why balance tends to worsen as we age.
Describe how balance can be improved by exercise.
Feel confident doing a variety of exercises that can help with keeping mobile and steady when practised regularly.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for beginners. However, to participate in the exercises, you will need to be able to maintain seated upright posture and to stand and move unaided e.g. getting up from a chair and walking backwards and forwards pain-free during class. There will be the option to use a chair or a wall for support for certain exercises.
If you have any uncontrolled or unstable medical conditions please seek advice from your medical practitioner and bring a letter confirming that it is safe for you to participate in an exercise session.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations and explanations by the tutor and practical work.
As the term progresses you will be encouraged to do additional practice at home.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students need clothing they feel comfortable moving in and non-slip shoes with flexible soles. Please avoid eating one and a half hours prior to exercising.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
