Description

What is the course about?

The course is an Introduction to BaGuaZhang (BGZ) focused on Dragon Palm form and practice. BaGuaZhang
normally translated as 'eight trigram palm’,( trigram being the symbols paired into the hexagrams that compose the
Book of Changes, I Ching / Yi Jing.) BaGuaZhang is a powerful effective Chinese marital art often linked with other
Chinese Internal marital arts like Hsing I and Tai Chi Chuan. BaGuaZhang is very distinctive, often recognised by
characteristic circling movement and form practice. These vary somewhat with lineage and style, the most
commonly practiced styles of BaGuaZhang are derived from Dragon Palm. Though most styles including this one
incorporate eight animal elements in their skills, movements and form practice.

What will we cover?

The course focuses on the four 'pillars' of practice - 'standing', 'turning', 'moving' and 'changing'.
'Standing' - static stationary postures that develop the skills, power and bodymind, of the animal and style
practiced, somewhat Qi kung like.
'Turning' - is the most distinctive aspect of BGZ practice, learning to 'walk the circle' holding various postures,
changing direction, developing skill, power, balance and health, arguably this is also a kind of moving Qi kung and
meditation as well as much more.
'Moving' - BGZ can be a very modular practice, key to developing skill and power by thoroughly practising
constituent skills in shorter drills, which both develop skill and power but importantly also train adaptive change, the
skill, power and awareness to adapt, change and find advantage is refined further in...
'Changing' - linking the constituent skills in often extremely practical movement chains / forms, these develop very
fluid flowing well integrated skills, extremely effective for health and well being as well as application.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

In a personally appropriate way practice, apply and develop the health and wellbeing potential inherent in the four
basic ‘pillars’ of Dragon Palm BaGuaZhang, to at least a basic foundation level.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

of levels and abilities. The approach and emphasis can be adapted to suit a wide range of student abilities and
interests.

I really appreciate the opportunity to participate in this training. The tutor exceptionally experienced in training and in caring for the safety of his students. He holds the training lineage in this art in direct line from its founder. Apart from the soft martial skills I have also found the training useful in correcting posture and breathing and I feel fitter and am gaining in flexibility.

I am completing the BaGuaZhang course that you are running with on Thursdays at 6pm.

I have done many different types of Martial Arts in the past, but Richard is one of the best teachers that I have met in over 30 years.

Everyone in his class wants to carry on with the lessons at the same time and days.

I would give his lessons a 11 out of 10.

I find that BaGuaZhang sessions leaves me feeling calm, energized, and optimistic. Afterwards I tend to crack on, get a lot more done each day than in the past. Also I'm getting more rest from my sleep.

From the word go I found it to be good for pesky lower back stiffness and aches. I'll definitely enroll again next term. The current tutor is the ideal person for this class.
