This course is for people who want to teach adults. Combine it with GT106, Lipreading Teacher Training Course, and you will qualify to teach lipreading in this sector.



You will attend Build for lecture blocks on the following dates in 2019: September 20th, 21st and October 4th, 5th.

What is the course about?

This is an introductory professional training course for people interested in teaching lipreading to adults. This course leads to the ‘threshold licence to teach’ national qualification, validated by City and Guilds. This professional teaching qualification is required before, or as, you start teaching in the lifelong learning sector. The content of this course is geared especially towards the teaching of lipreading to adults. To learn how to teach lipreading, it should be combined with GT106, the Lipreading Teacher Training Course.

What will we cover?

The course will include:

Theory
• The characteristics of the adult learner
• Basic teaching methods and techniques for teaching lipreading
• Planning lessons and courses
• Some basic group management techniques
• Roles, responsibilities and relationships in lifelong learning
• Understanding inclusive learning and teaching in lifelong learning
• Using inclusive learning and teaching approaches in lifelong learning
• The principles of assessment in lifelong learning; how to check your students are learning

Practice
Regular teaching practice in your peer group (microteaching).

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Demonstrate you understand the characteristics of the adult learner and barriers to learning
• Recognise your roles and responsibilities and boundaries as a teacher, and establish ground rules with learners
• Plan a session for adults, and a short course
• Teach your peers effectively in microteaching sessions
• Choose appropriate teaching/training methods and strategies for teaching lipreading
• Select and use equipment and resources for teaching
• Describe some strategies for managing groups
• Use an inclusive approach in your teaching

To achieve the award you will need to:
• Attend 80% of the course
• Complete a successful microteaching session
• Produce an electronic portfolio of assignments

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

In order to get the most from this course you should be able to:
• Express yourself clearly, fluently and accurately, both verbally and in written English
• Research, read, comprehend and analyse text
• Write concisely, using different styles, format and structure for different purposes, applying accuracy in grammar, punctuation and spelling

No formal academic qualifications are required, although you will need to demonstrate that you can work at Level 3 (‘A’ level standard).
Acceptance onto the course follows a successful interview

You will need basic computer skills and be able to use technology for teaching and learning, e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Internet, Email, Google Classroom.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

We use lectures, distance learning, demonstrations, group work, pair work, individual work, handouts, tests, teaching practice, tutorial, written assignments, visits and observation.

You will write assignments in your own time and compile an electronic coursework portfolio containing assignments, session plans, teaching material, tutor assessments and self-evaluations.
The course uses Google Classroom, a Virtual Learning Environment. Resources, discussion and news forums will all be available on this site. Your assignments will be submitted and feedback will be given via Google Classroom.

In addition, you will be required to:
• Do some research on your own as guided by your tutor
• Participate in forum discussions.

• Membership of Association of Teachers of Lipreading to Adults (ATLA). Student membership is currently free.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course is the minimum qualification you need in order to start teaching adults. You can continue from here to the PGCE/Cert.Ed. Your course tutor can signpost you to further courses and appropriate advice.
