Learn how an audition panel sees you in order to maximise your chances of success. You will work on your audition repertoire to build a solid base of classical and contemporary audition pieces.

Description

What is the course about?

Whether you are as seasoned actor or just starting out, your audition material is your single most important asset once you are in front of a casting panel, or a drama school panel. Here you will learn how an audition panel sees you, and you will work on your audition repertoire building a solid base of classical and contemporary audition pieces. We will work on a range of audition material (both prepared and unprepared).
You will be required to learn new audition material as we progress through this course, so please be aware that you will need to conduct some work from home (this will be valuable time spent).

What will we cover?

• Casting types
• Industry audition processes
• Characterisation and thought processes for audition material
• Cold reading of unseen material/sight-reading

Please note that acting classes by their very nature can involve exercises and the exploration of material that some students may find challenging.

Please note that acting classes by their very nature can involve exercises and the exploration of material that some students may find challenging.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Identify the types of roles for which you would make suitable casting
• Locate where to find casting notices if you do not have representation
•Be able to understand and navigate the audition room and what is expected of you
• Professionally present a contemporary and a classical monologue
• Confidently approach to sight reading.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The willingness to take risks, challenge oneself and have fun is equally important.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Communicate clearly in discussion and drama practice.
• Read and respond to a variety of text.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Individually, in pairs and groups.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Comfortable clothing should be worn. You will need to source and bring a copy of a contemporary and/or a classical monologue with you to the class. Help and guidance will be provided that will give you an indication of how to select and locate appropriate material as part of the course. However, it is important that you bring anything you have with you that you are currently working on or wish to develop and improve during the sessions.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Any professional development skills courses.

It’s definitely worth doing, to prepare you for auditions or keep your skills sharp.

I think that attending this course may have been the smartest thing I have done. We covered so much. Not only have I developed four new audition scripts and one song, the course consolidated much of the other training I have previously received and also added hugely to my confidence. Subject matter and feedback was treated seriously by our course lecturer who demanded a professional level of commitment but was generous with advice gained from ‘real life industry experience’ the course was challenging but fun. Subjects covered included: vocal and breathing exercise and preparation; physicality; sight reading skills; pre and post audition preparation; theatre practice and vocabulary; identifying casting types; preparation of monologues; revision of Shakespearean verse and form and plenty of constructive feedback.

On Friday 21st April, along with a bunch of other nervous but hugely enthusiastic and very friendly hopefuls, I attended an audition to join the prestigious Actors Training Company. The audition was incredibly thorough, nothing seemed to escape the scrutiny of the audition panel my delivery, directability, physicality were closely examined. The training I had received on the 'Audition Ready'course proved to be invaluable and definitely gave me the edge! I am delighted to say I have been offered a place on ATC and feel that the money spent on the audition course was probably the best investment I could have made.

Whatever your level, professional ambitions and dreams this course is worth every penny!

Thank you Build drama department.

The following comments apply to this course as taught in the Spring Term of this year (2016).
I cannot praise this course too highly. It was remarkably well taught; the content was precise and to the point; and the atmosphere of the classes was conducive to optimal gain for each and every student. No practical detail, so long as it was pertinent to the presentations of auditions, was considered too pedestrian or mundane to be included. Yet , at the other end of the spectrum, the classes did not neglect the attention which passages with rich meaning and complex syntax, such as Shakespeare's, inevitably require. Finally, despite the brevity of the course, tips on vocal health and efficacy were also added.
Courses such as these are in general liable to err in two directions. One or more individual student(s) may wittingly or unwittingly monopolise attention. Alternatively, it may address everyone, but without individualised comment. The sizeof the class naturally dictates the outcome regarding the latter point. The number of students in this class happened to be ideal. Nevertheless it is to the credit of the teacher that everyone got equal and fair attention, leaving none feeling discontented.
The students were all intelligent in their observation and judgement of a given piece of acting, and thanks to the enabling yet time-managed atmosphere that had been created, contributed actively, empathetically, and pertinently in the aftermath of each presentation.
All in all, therefore, an immensely satisfying experience.

The whole course was brilliantly planned with new angles and lively teaching-points every week, solidly useful homeworks (which were relevant, and built on!), and lots of surprising and exciting practical work which emphasised our topics and our growth. The atmosphere was intense and strongly supportive. The whole thing was immensely enjoyable – I looked forward to it every week - and seriously helpful in terms of understanding processes, pitfalls, priorities, choices … masses of stuff! Highly recommended.
