What is the course about?
This is a general writing course which will develop your writing styles and your ability to write different types of text. The main focus will be on how to write in a discursive form and the language required to do this but we will also practise report writing and how to summarise and present statistical information. Differences between formal and informal register will also be examined as will how to create interest and write to the point.
What will we cover?
In this course we will discover:
• What are the qualities of a well-written essay – how is it constructed, what are the different types of structure, how is an argument created, what is the role of argument and counter-argument, how effective paragraphing is achieved, how does an essay or other piece of writing cohere, what makes a good introduction and conclusion
• What are the best ways to summarise and present statistics and other forms of data, how to write about these and maintain the reader’s interest, what specific language do you need
• How to move between formal and informal registers including what makes some language forms more formal than others
• How to create interest for the reader particularly through vocabulary and how to write about complex ideas clearly and simply.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• identify the different features of a well-written essay – its different possible structures, its use of argument and counter-argument, the use of evidence, effective paragraphing and links between them, how it coheres, and the qualities and function of good introductions and conclusions
• write a high quality essay which exemplifies the features above
• summarise and present statistics and other forms of data in an engaging way using appropriate language
• identify and use some key structures of formal and informal writing
• use vocabulary to create interest and involve the reader in your writing
• express complex ideas in a simple way and in a style appropriate to your purpose and reader.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course level is for Level 2+ students (C1-C2). You should be able to take part in long and challenging conversations, understand complex authentic written texts and express yourselves fairly clearly in medium-length texts or longer.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This course will focus on the task of writing so students will be expected to complete a variety of tasks as a way of learning both inside and outside the classroom. During the class you will work in pairs or small groups, and sometimes as a whole group. Your tutor will also work with you individually. The class will be interactive and dynamic. You will be expected to do some homework every week and use Google Classroom outside the class.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets. It will be helpful if you can bring your own laptop to class. Build can provide you with one if you do not have one.
