What is the course about?

Familiarise yourself with grades 1-5 of the AB jazz piano syllabus, and equip yourself to teach jazz improvisation to your piano students.

What will we cover?

- Ear training
- Swing, latin, funk and African rhythms
- Roman numeral analysis, chord symbols, chord voicing, harmonic progression
- Scales and modes
- Musical patterns
- Improvisation
- 12-bar blues
- Walking bass lines.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Demonstrate an improved knowledge of the syllabus and its requirements
- Deal with some of the problems in teaching this material
- Prepare pupils for the jazz exams with confidence
- Demonstrate an improved understanding of the jazz idiom.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Participants should have fluent piano technique and reading skills, and experience of one-to-one piano teaching.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

We will play material from books 1-5, and investigate the musical issues that arise. Demonstration and participation in aural tests and quick studies. Listen to recordings of syllabus tunes. Some of the course will take place in the keyboards room so each student sits at, and will play, a digital piano.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring the ABRSM Jazz Piano Pieces books, at least Grades 1-3, Grades 4 and 5 optional..
Once enrolled you will be sent a CODE giving you a 15% discount on ABRSM jazz piano publications ordered from the ABRSM website, valid between July 22nd and August 4th. Once the course has started you may wish to use the code to invest in further supporting materials, eg: sample Aural Test and Quick Study booklets, Grades 1-5 CDs, or the Scales Syllabus.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Improvisation for classical piano teachers in December (ME262) or March (ME264).
