Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a life-coach?

Perhaps you’re curious as to whether you could make a successful living out of it.

You may have experienced the benefits of coaching and are intrigued to learn more.

Or perhaps you’re already on your path to becoming a coach and are keen to find out how you can develop the skills you already have.

Today more people than ever are considering hiring a coach or becoming one, and it’s easy to see why.

Many of us now seek greater meaning, purpose and fulfillment in our lives and careers and coaching can help us achieve that. Although a relatively new industry, coaching is now the second fastest growing industry worldwide, following IT.

Since entering the business world in the 1980s (evolved from the sports field) it has rapidly expanded into a multi-billion pound industry and is widely recognised as being of value, relevance and significance due to its many benefits.

So, what is life coaching and why is there such a huge demand for it?

Life coaching is an empowering and creative process that uses a whole range of creative tools and techniques to support you in releasing your true potential personally and professionally.

In essence, life coaching bridges the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

While coaching does help you set goals and break them down into manageable action steps, resulting in higher performance, motivation and optimum results, it goes beyond that.

Life coaching is an art and a way of life.

It’s a delightful inward journey of self-exploration and discovery that enhances your self-awareness, encourages you to take full accountability of your life and to make empowered choices in line with who you are and what you value.

Through guidance and the skillful use of powerful questioning, coaching can open up new portals of possibility where you once saw obstacles and trigger ‘AHA’ moments that can change the course of your life.

One of the most popular and effective coaching tools (that is definitely worth having in your tool kit!) is the GROW model.

What is the GROW model?

This simple, yet powerful, 4-step model, created by Performance Coach Sir John Whitmore, enables you to structure a coaching session that get results in as little as 30 minutes.

Using the GROW sequence – Goals, Reality, Options and Will – you’re able to evaluate where you are and where you want to be, explore a variety of routes to reach your goal and commit to action steps that take you in the direction of your what you want. It’s a quick and easy way to coach yourself and others.

So how do you become a life coach?

As a coach you need to walk your talk! So committing to your own growth by immersing yourself in the world of personal development and consistently pushing through your own perceived limitations is key.

There are many valuable resources: tools, techniques and alternative approaches to discover. It’s essential to expand your tool kit and knowledge of the industry. To become a skilled life coach you must be willing to practise, make mistakes and grow from them.

Although it’s currently an unregulated industry, if you want to stand out as a professional life coach, it’s important to identify the type of coach you want to be (whether it’s a health coach, executive coach or lifestyle coach) and then find the right accreditation and course that fits you.

Life coaching is not a hobby it’s a business, so you’ll need to create a business plan and stretch yourself. Take consistent action to push your business forward and be visible. This means creating a website, business cards, an online presence, a media campaign and build your network.
