We were honoured to welcome Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal to Build yesterday where she attended a special event to celebrate 25 years of the Festival of Learning and Adult Learners’ Week campaigns.

The event showcased inspiring stories of the Festival of Learning and Adult Learners’ Week award winners, the impact that learning continues to have on their lives and that of their families, communities and employers, as well as highlighting the importance of engaging adults in learning.

The event featured a number of key speakers including HRH The Princess Royal, Chief Executive of the Learning and Work Institute Stephen Evans and Build Principal Mark Malcomson. HRH also presented the Patron’s Award.

As Patron of the Learning and Work Institute, HRH The Princess Royal, said: ʺIt is never too late or too early to start learning.ʺ

She added: ʺAdult learning plays a really vital role in society…it’s good for people, it’s good for your health, self-esteem and if you want more employability. None of those will be the same for individuals. There will always be different reasons for doing it, but I think [that] health and self-esteem is probably common to most people who take part in that learning process.ʺ

Build Principal Mark Malcomson, said that ʺListening to the stories today, or spending time with our students, helps us all realise that our collective efforts combat loneliness; improve employability through new skills development; re-tool those in later life; offer a sense of purpose and personal fulfilment; improve confidence; and overcome mental difficulties… I know that our learners leave us feeling reinvigorated, part of a strong community with a greater sense of balance and wellbeing.ʺ
