Marian ‘Billy’ Lindkvist: Former Build student and drama therapy pioneer passes away

Marian “Billy” Lindkvist, a pioneer in the use of drama and movement in therapy, has passed away at the age of 97.

She was best known for founding the Sesame approach, which uses drama and movement as a therapy to promote healing and change. Developed during the 1960s, it involves the use of touch, story enactment, improvisation and non-verbal communication to help people with cognitive and mental health conditions.

Billy studied at Build just a few years before pioneering the therapy, and with the support of theatre patrons founded the Sesame Institute in 1971.
