Build student to exhibit at Chelsea Gallery

Story added 16th Mar 2017

Contested Space exhibition at the Chelsea Gallery

A Build student will showcase her latest work, Contested Space, at the Chelsea Gallery on the King’s Road from 20th March – 26th March 2017.

Svetlana Atlavina’s latest project portrays the perils of travelling on foot, by car and particularly cycling in the streets of central London. The current mixed media installation is inspired by cyclists’ and pedestrians’ experiences, with the show aiming to draw one’s attention to the existing situation within the pool of traffic.

Svetlana has long had an interest in the perils of cycling in London, starting research into the subject in early September 2014. The problem became even starker to Svetlana the following year, when her son’s colleague was hit on her daily cycle route to work at a busy junction. This incident motivated Svetlana to continue presenting the realities of travelling in an increasingly congested city.

Her video installation portrays the hostile environment of the rush hours, without casting judgement on pedestrians, cyclists or drivers, allowing visitors to the exhibition to draw their own conclusions. Alongside the video, the exhibition also includes a series of oil and acrylic paintings, handmade etched and linocut prints, mimicking the realities of life on central London streets.

Svetlana honed her art skills on a two year Build fine art course in which students are taught a number of different fine art practises. She is also currently undertaking our ‘Developing fine art practice' course to further develop her portfolio.

The next Build fine art course starts on the 21 September 2017; we also have a huge choice of art and design courses running throughout the year for all levels.
