Afternoon cinema: new and current releases - Film studies courses at Build

Last night, the 89th Academy Awards took place in Hollywood, with films including Moonlight, Manchester By The Sea, and La La Land all enjoying a particularly successful night.

Below, you can find Build’s alternative Oscars, pooled from the thoughts of Build film coordinator John Wischmeyer and his ‘Afternoon cinema: new and current releases’ class...

  •        What was the standout film / individual performance of the year?

The class overwhelmingly backed one film that generated relatively little Oscars buzz – Hell Or High Water, particularly praising Jeff Bridges’ central role as a rugged sheriff in small town America.  Natalie Portman also won praise for her take on former first lady Jackie Kennedy in Jackie.

  •       Most overrated film/performance of the year?

The class were mixed on this question, but La La Land’s central performances attracted muted responses, with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling’s performances not impressing every student. Martin Scorsese’s pet project Silence also received a lukewarm reception.

  •       Any notable omissions/underrated performances?

The class were fairly unanimous in nominating three films that continually flew under the radar during awards season: Tom Ford’s stylishly designed Nocturnal Animals, German comedy Toni Erdmann, and Andrea Arnold’s gritty drama American Honey. Emily Blunt’s part in the critically-panned The Girl On The Train and Annette Bening’s performance in 20th Century Women also gained honourable mentions.

  •       Rising stars to watch out for in 2017?

Judging by the response of the class, Mahershala Ali can look forward to a stellar 2017, after securing the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in Moonlight. Child actors also won the hearts of the class, with the junior members of the casts in Lion and Moonlight repeatedly winning praise from the group.
